“Giving is a must” Really? “Yes it is.”

Last week I wrote on the truth about tithe. As I sat in reflection after that post I decided it might be beneficially to look at giving on a whole. So I will look at three other types of giving. The bible teaches us that it is more blessed to give than to receive. It also tells us that “ Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.” ( Luke 6:36).

It clear then from the above that it is in giving that we receive. So who are we to give to? Of course you can give to whomever you please at whatever times pleases you, but there are some types of giving which provokes the hands of God in your life.

1.Parental giving– Exodus 20:12   says “ Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.” This is the first commandment with a promise therefore if you fulfil the condition then the promise will be delivered. Honouring your parent is giving to them, and blessing them with part of what God has blessed you with. It does not have to be that they are in need, and it does not matter what they will do with what you give to them. It is clear in the above scripture that when you honour them your days will be long and it will be well with you.  What can you give to them then? Give as the occasion serves you.

2.  Giving to the needy– I once heard a pastor that I admire says the following and I keyed into it. “A Christian who is not covenant minded cannot received anything from God.” It stuck with me and then I start looking for the covenants to top into. Remember a covenant is an agreement enacted by God which can never be broken.  In my search I came across the scriptures which say Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee” and “He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord, and that which he hath given, He will repay him again.” So I topped into those promises knowing that God is able, I then start giving to the poor and needy Jews in Jerusalem. I also pray for peace in Jerusalem. I am a Christian but we all know that Jerusalem is God’s chosen city and that there are a lot of Jews living in difficult circumstances so I give to them monthly. I see it as building up treasures in Heaven, because I want to wear a crown in Heaven. The bible tells us that there are crowns in Heaven and my effort on earth is to wear one of them when I get there.  Another of my pastors says that “if you pay the school fee of others children then your children will never lack school fees” again I keyed into this and start a scholarship fund back in my country to help people who may struggle to send their children to secondary school. We need to see that we ae blessed to be a blessing and the only way to preserve our blessings is to be a blessing to others.

3. Kingdom promotion giving–  ….. “For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.  But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”( Matt 6:32-33).What can you give to advance the Kingdom of God, some people say nothing but Jesus says otherwise. As you can see from the above it says seek the kingdom of God first. Seeking means seeing where you can make a difference.  I believe that a lot of us Christians neglect this but it’s not too late to start doing the right thing.  So what can we give to promote God’s kingdom.  We can pray for its advancement, soul winning, manual labour, say painting the church etc. and as always financial giving.  A lady in my church recently saw the need for a church bus and she went ahead and bought it so the church will be able to pick people up for service if they are not driving etc.  We should not let our house be all adorned and God’s house lies waste. See the account of this here.

See other verses on giving here.

As always you are blessed and I would love to hear from you.

Remain blessed
